The whole house

An entire lodge, only your party

Once a group reaches six travellers, the maths often shifts. A sole-use villa is no longer a luxury upgrade. It is a way to keep the whole party in one place, with one chef, one vehicle, and a flexible schedule the lodge will not be running for anyone else.

Where this trip starts

Six to twelve travellers, one private property

The villas and exclusive-use lodges we book sit on private concessions with their own access, their own pool, their own ranger and tracker, and a chef who runs the kitchen entirely around your party. Bedrooms are usually three to eight. A few stretch to twelve. Pricing is per villa per night, not per person, which makes the unit cost competitive once you cross seven or eight travellers.

The shape suits multi-generation families, friends celebrating a milestone year, and small wedding parties extending the safari with an inner circle. We have planned over forty sole-use bookings in the past two years. The pattern is consistent. The first morning is slow, the kids find the pool, and the schedule for the rest of the trip writes itself.

Why this kind of trip

What a private villa changes

01

The house runs on your schedule

A shared lodge runs on a fixed timetable. Dinner at seven, drives at six. A sole-use villa waits for you. If the teenagers need to sleep until nine, breakfast waits. If the grandparents want to be back by midday, the vehicle turns around. The staff are yours entirely.

02

Multi-generational travel without friction

Three generations with different wake times, different energy levels, and different ideas about what a perfect day looks like. A private house and a private vehicle absorbs that. The guide becomes the common thread. The fire at night brings everyone back together.

03

The food is yours to direct

The chef cooks what you want. A birthday cake on the evening of the milestone. A traditional braai one night. A long lunch on the deck the day you do not leave the property. No set menu, no table arrangements to negotiate. The kitchen is focused entirely on your group.

04

The right houses in the right locations

Cape Winelands, Plett, Hermanus, the Sabi Sand area, Madikwe. We know which private houses are well staffed, which have large enough communal spaces for groups of twelve to sixteen, and which are well positioned for the wildlife or coast you are there to see.

Sample journeys

Three sole-use trips we plan most often

Each one is a starting point. We share house names, vehicle arrangements and logistics in the planning conversation.

01

South Africa, ten nights

Sabi Sand private house then Cape Town. Groups of eight to twelve.

Five nights in a private four-suite house in the Sabi Sand area with your own guide and vehicle. Then Cape Town for four nights in a large villa or two connecting suites overlooking the Atlantic. The Sabi Sand leg is for the wildlife. The Cape Town leg is for the wine, the peninsula, and the long meals that feel like a reward. Good for milestone birthdays and family gatherings where the wildlife is important but not the only point.

02

South Africa, nine nights

Cape Winelands house then Plett. Coast-focused, groups of ten to sixteen.

Four nights in a private estate in the Cape Winelands with your own chef and a driver for the wine country days. Then the Garden Route by private transfer to Plett, where beach houses take larger groups easily. This route works for groups where not everyone is a wildlife person. The Winelands house feels like a house party that happens to have extraordinary scenery. Plett closes it with sea air and long evenings on the deck.

03

South Africa, nine nights

Madikwe private house. Malaria-free, multi-generational.

Four nights in a private house in the Madikwe area, malaria-free, with a guide who is experienced with groups that include children and older travellers. Then Cape Town or the Winelands for the second half. Madikwe's malaria-free status removes a complication for groups that span several generations. The house takes twelve comfortably. The drive time from Johannesburg is manageable if you want to avoid a charter plane with a large group.

From a recent journey

★★★★★

We had the most beautiful, relaxing down time. The private lodge is the perfect escape from the crazy life we all lead. The food was delicious, the staff so friendly and helpful. We saw amazing sightings and the tranquil calm environment was exactly what we needed.

The process

Safari planning, done properly

There is no algorithm picking your lodges. From the first message to the day you fly home, you deal with real people who care about this as deeply as you do.

01

A real conversation first

We start with a call or a long message. No commitment, no quote forms. We want to understand the trip you are imagining, your travel history, your budget, and what you have always quietly wanted Africa to give you.

02

A proposal that surprises you

We do not just suggest the obvious. We bring options you would not have found on your own: the newly reopened concession, the off-peak rate at the lodge that is usually full, the combination of regions that works for your dates.

03

We refine until it is right

We iterate together. There is no pressure. Some clients take three conversations to land a trip, others take two weeks. We only confirm the booking when you are completely certain.

04

We are with you the whole way

Pre-trip prep, packing notes, what to expect on the ground. A direct line to us while you are travelling. If anything changes on the trip, we handle it before you have to think about it.

Common questions

Common questions

What group size works for sole-use?

Most private houses we use sleep eight to sixteen guests in four to six suites. Below eight, a sole-use take-over is often poor value compared to booking individual rooms at a private lodge. Above sixteen, we look at adjacent properties or two separate houses on the same reserve.

Can we plan a milestone celebration at the property?

Yes, and this is one of the main reasons people choose sole-use. We coordinate with the house manager on birthday dinners, anniversary set-ups, and any specific evening you want marked. The staff are used to this and do it well when given time to prepare.

Is a sole-use villa always a bush property?

No. We use private houses in the Cape Winelands, Plett, and Hermanus for groups where the coast or wine country is the focus. Some groups do a bush house for the first half and a coastal house for the second. We plan whichever combination fits the group.

Does a private house come with a guide and vehicle?

Yes, when it is in a wildlife reserve. The guide and vehicle are part of the sole-use arrangement. For Winelands and coastal houses we arrange private drivers separately. We make sure you know exactly what is included before anything is confirmed.

How far in advance do we need to book?

Private houses go faster than standard rooms, particularly over December, Easter, and school holiday dates. Eight to twelve months ahead is sensible for the most requested properties. For a group milestone on a specific date, earlier is better. We tell you availability honestly at the first conversation.
