Terms and conditions
Terms and conditions
Last updated: April 2026
These are the terms that apply when you use the Marula Hill website (marulahill.com), enquire with us, or book a trip through us. They are written in plain English. Where something matters legally, we have flagged it.
Who we are
Marula Hill is a luxury safari travel brand based in South Africa. We plan and arrange safari journeys across Africa for international clients. South African residents are served by our domestic site at marulahill.co.za.
By using this site or sending us an enquiry, you accept these terms.
What this site is
The marulahill.com website is an editorial and enquiry platform. It is not a booking engine. Nothing on this site is a binding offer of a trip, a price, or a date.
When you enquire, we respond with a tailored proposal. A trip is only confirmed once you have:
- Received and accepted a written proposal from us
- Paid the deposit specified in that proposal
- Received our written confirmation that the booking is in place
- Until those three things happen, no contract exists between us.
- Prices on the site are illustrative. Real safari pricing varies by season, lodge availability, exchange rate, and the specifics of your trip. Every quoted price you receive is in writing in your proposal, valid for the period stated, and based on the assumptions listed in that proposal.
- We charge in your preferred currency where practical. Currency fluctuations between proposal and final payment are passed on transparently – we do not absorb them, and we do not surprise you with them.
- The specific terms of any trip are set out in the proposal you accept. They will include:
- The deposit amount and when it is due
- The balance amount and when it is due
- The cancellation curve (i.e. what you forfeit if you cancel at different points)
- The refund policy if a supplier (lodge, airline, operator) cancels on us
- Cancellation curves vary by camp and operator. Some smaller camps require 100% non-refundable payment 90 days out. Some larger groups offer more flexibility. We tell you the specifics for each trip up front, in writing.
- We strongly recommend full travel insurance for every trip we plan. We can recommend providers but do not sell insurance ourselves.
- We are an intermediary. We plan trips and book on your behalf with lodges, operators, charter airlines, ground handlers, and guides. Each of those suppliers has their own terms, which become part of your trip when you book.
- We take responsibility for:
- The quality of the planning
- Honest advice about lodges, seasons, and pairings
- Communication with you throughout
- Resolving anything that goes wrong while you are travelling, to the best of our ability
- We are not directly responsible for:
- Acts or omissions of third-party suppliers (lodges, airlines, etc), beyond our duty to choose them carefully
- Force majeure events (weather, civil unrest, disease outbreaks, government actions, road closures)
- Personal injury or loss not caused by our negligence
- Costs incurred because you missed a flight, ignored visa requirements, or did not take out adequate insurance
- To the extent permitted by law, our liability to you for any single trip is limited to the total amount you paid us for that trip.
- Nothing in these terms excludes liability for death, personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be limited under the laws of South Africa, the United Kingdom, or the European Union, depending on your location.
- Articles, photographs, and itineraries on the site are written and curated by us. You can quote short excerpts with credit and a link back. Wholesale republishing requires written permission.
- User-generated content – reviews, comments, testimonials – remains yours. By submitting them, you grant us permission to use them on the site and in marketing.
- We link to lodges, operators, conservation organisations, and our sister site at marulahill.co.za. We are not responsible for the content of external sites.
- These terms are governed by the laws of South Africa. Any dispute arising from your use of this site or from a trip booked through us will be settled in the South African courts, unless you live in the UK or EU and consumer protection law in your jurisdiction gives you the right to bring a claim locally.
- If we update these terms, the date at the top of this page changes. Material changes will be flagged on the site for at least 30 days.
