A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your device. We use a small number of them, and we have tried to be honest about which.
What we use
Essential cookies. These keep the site working. They remember things like whether you have closed a notice, whether you are logged in to the newsletter, and whether you have accepted this cookies notice. Without them, parts of the site break. We do not ask permission for these because the site cannot function without them.
Analytics cookies (Google Analytics). These tell us, in aggregate, which pages people read, how long they stay, and which articles get shared. They do not identify you personally. They do tell us if "Sabi Sand vs Kruger" is doing better than "Botswana or Zambia" so we know what to write next. You can opt out by clicking decline on the cookies banner, or by enabling Do Not Track in your browser.
Newsletter platform cookies (Ghost). When you subscribe to the Marula Hill newsletter, Ghost (the platform that runs this site) sets a cookie so we know you are subscribed and do not show you the signup prompt again. This cookie is set only after you subscribe.
Embedded widget cookies. Two third-party widgets sit on the site:
- Elfsight – powers the partner logo carousel on the home page and the enquiry form. Elfsight may set cookies for analytics. Their privacy policy is here.
- YouTube/Vimeo embeds – when we embed video. These set cookies only if you press play.
What we do not use
- We do not use retargeting cookies
- We do not let advertisers track you on this site
- We do not sell or share data collected via cookies with third-party data brokers
- We do not use cookies to build a marketing profile of you
Managing cookies
You can disable cookies in your browser settings. Most browsers let you block all cookies, block third-party cookies only, or clear cookies on a schedule.
