About this site

Field Notes is a place for considered observations.

It’s where I collect ideas, stories, and reflections from work, travel, and life — the things worth keeping in the margins of a notebook.

My background spans business, media, and public life, but this space isn’t about titles or résumés. It’s about pausing to notice: the patterns in the day-to-day, the lessons in both the ordinary & the unexpected, and the connections between seemingly distant worlds.

Some pieces are short. Others take their time.

All are written with the same intent: to record, to share, and to think a little more deeply.

Thanks for reading.

About Me.

I’m Zak Kirkup - I'm born & raised in Western Australia. My family is from the Wilunyu people of the Yamatji nation. My work moves between business, media, and community, but I’ve always been drawn to writing as a way to slow down & try to make sense of things.

I've spent most of my life in politics, & have since moved into enterprise. I am a strong believer that jobs & opportunity is the best way to help Close the Gap & throughout all my work in business that has been my focus.

Away from work, I live with my partner, Katie, and our son, Theodore. When I’m not with them, I’m often running, travelling, reading or, evidently, writing.
